George Washington (February 22, 1732 [O.S. February 11, 1731] December 14, 1799) was the dominant military and political leader of the new United States of America from 1775 to 1797, leading the American victory over Britain in the American Revolutionary War as commander in chief of the Continental Army and was the first President of the United States. For his central role in the formation of the United States, he is referred to as the father of our country. He presided over the Philadelphia Convention that drafted the U.S. Constitution . He was awarded the first Congressional Gold Medal, and has been consistently ranked by scholars as one of the greatest U.S. Presidents.
