Robert Edward Lee (January 19, 1807 - October 12, 1870) was a career United States Army officer and combat engineer. Robert E. Lee was born into a wealthy Virginian family that was descended from English royalty. He was indirectly related to Sir Thomas More and King Robert II of Scotland through the Earls of Crawford. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1829 at the head of his class in artillery and tactics, and he began his military career in the Army Corps of Engineers. His distinguished career peaked during the Civil War when he was the commanding General of the Confederate Army. He fought with great integrity but had the sad and unfortunate duty to have to surrender the Confederate Army to General Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, his home state.
"Excedllent reproduction. Error in the narrative: Lee was the commander and surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia - not the 'Confederate Army'. "
- Bill Morris
